NHS - PMO Management

Challenge

Streamlining and standardising the PMO in North East London Integrated Care Board. Delivering the mechanisms for a mandated national programme while improving risk management and operational consistency.

Our Approach

  • Cross-Functional Delivery: Managed the delivery of a mandated national programme across multiple teams and stakeholders, ensuring the procedure was documented to safeguard ongoing operations.

  • Risk Management: Led department-wide risk identification, mitigation and escalation in line with organisational policy and external auditors.

  • Capability Building: Created a standardised project management toolkit to drive methodological consistency across teams.

  • PMO Management: Built and nurtured a PMO team of three - shaping recruitment, providing pastoral support and delivering tailored professional development aligned with organisational priorities.

  • Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing: Established a monthly Project Management Forum, bringing Commissioners and Subject Matter Experts together to discuss system priorities, including commissioning structures, the 10-Year Health Plan for England, evaluation frameworks and risk policy.

  • Continuous Improvement: Developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and introduced structured Lessons Learnt and After Action Reviews (AARs) to inform future programmes.

Impact

  • Delivered a mandated national programme within governance and quality standards.

  • Embedded continuous improvement through SOPs and AARs.

  • Strengthened risk management across the portfolio.

  • Enhanced PMO capability and system-wide collaboration.
